After many years as a Steiner School for primary students, the move to secondary education was gentle. The campus is a collection of uniquely beautiful hand-crafted buildings interwoven with stories and culture. With the development of the Master Plan, it was clear that a Learning Centre for the secondary students had to help sculpt the space that the seniors occupied. The Primary School buildings are arrayed around a central green lawn. The new Seniors Building was to form part of the enclosure of the secondary school ‘Common’. The space available required two levels. All other buildings on the site are single storey. A challenge was to shape a form that was comfortable with the adjacent sensuous moulded shapes without overpowering with height or being imitative. As the home to the Senior students, this building has to be a space to provide transition to adulthood, a safe place to explore, a creative place to experiment, a base to look out to the world awaiting but with intimate connection to the nurturing environment that has brought them through the last 12 years.
