Covered Outdoor Learning Area and future Gymnasium

The new Covered Outdoor Learning Area at Prescott Primary Northern evolved from an urgent need for more covered open play and learning space as the school continues to grow on a small site.  The decision to locate it near the middle of the school, came from the Master Plan.  The Master Plan developed as a  collaboration between students, parents, school council, staff and leadership and Kilpatrick Architecture.  This has a courtyard at the heart of the school surrounded by a future administration wing, a future multi-purpose gymnasium and activity hall and classroom.  This new C.O.L.A. is the first stage of the Gymnasium which will eventually provide a full-sized indoor basketball court with sprung timber floor, amenities and a P.E. classroom.  The completed Gymnasium will open eastward to the courtyard and to the south and the lawns and Nature Play area.

In the meantime, the C.O.L.A. provides excellent sun and rain protection for students during and outside class times and is enhancing the recognition of this zone as the ‘heart’ of the school.

It is always a pleasure to work with this forward-thinking and innovative group of educators.

Thanks again to the team at Meinhardt Group for their design of the services, civil and structural engineering requirements.

Horizon built and supervised the structure with a minimum of fuss on a small site, during the school term, despite the large crane required for the large steel members and height of the structure.
