Primary School, Edwardstown

Catholic Primary School

3 stages of redevelopment

Located on a compact site shared with the parish church, hall and rectory and adjacent a major arterial road, this little school is an oasis in a highly built-up post-war suburbia.  We worked carefully with the school and the school community to develop a comprehensive master plan incorporating all the buildings on the site.  The key was defining and establishing the heart in the core of the complex of church and school.  Annual celebrations are focused on this central grassy courtyard bringing the community together.  Buildings have been expanded and new ones built to enhance and encompass the heart.   Generous balconies with natural timber roof and balustrades provide warmth and human scale to the 2-storey buildings.  The transportable classrooms sit comfortably with the solid double storey structures with a broad enclosed verandah area which opens to the outdoor play areas.   Classrooms and breakout areas are linked with glass sliding walls.  There is a spaciousness, welcoming and a generous feel to this little community school. We have been privileged to share in the redevelopment.
